Breathless by Numen/For Use

Das kroatisch-österreichische Kunstkollektiv Numen/For Use ist eine kontinuierliche Zusammenarbeit zwischen Designer und Szenografen Sven Jonke, Christoph Katzler und Nikola Radeljković. Im Rahmen der Breathless Ausstellung stellt das Kollektiv nun konzeptionelle und mechanistische Modelle vor, die aus ihren groß angelegten Bühnenbildprojekten und Installationsarbeiten abgeleitet wurden. Beide Modelle erweitern das experimentelle Feld der Ausgangsobjekte durch die Einführung eines Elements von lebensähnlichen Prozessen und Rhythmen, die sich in einem orchestrierten Intervall von Bewegung und Gegenbewegung manifestieren - ein strukturelles "Atmen". Diese Intervention verwandelt ehemals statische Entwürfe in dramaturgische Sequenzen, die nun anders wahrgenommen werden, sobald sie in einer Schleife sinnloser Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion beobachtet werden. Sie werden zu de-kontextualisierten Prinzipien, ohne theatralische Metaphern und Bedeutungen. Stattdessen beziehen sie sich auf das mechanistische Universum, auf die unaufhörliche Dialektik von Konstruktion und Zerstörung, auf den Fluss von Materie und das Unheimliche im Raum. Die Form eines regelmäßigen Hexaeders (Würfels) verstärkt nur die axiomatische Natur dieser Prozesse. Es bezeichnet die rationellste Fragmentierung des Raumes und baut eine dreidimensionale Matrix auf.
STRING – EIN MECHANISCHES MODEL
Die String-Installation, die von Numen/For Use als autonom und bewohnbar definiert wurde, basiert auf einem Produktionssystem von großen geometrischen aufblasbaren Objekten. Dies stellt einen weiteren Schritt in einer fortlaufenden experimentellen Strecke dar, die die Gruppe mit der Net Blow Up-Installation (mehrere Schichten flexibler Netze, die in einer aufgepumpten Blase schweben) begann. Dieses mal hat man sich jedoch "riskanterer" Materialien bedient: Einem dünnem Seil, das als Spannmittel/Gegenzug die Sicherheitsnetze ersetzt. Beide Werkstoffe werden erst dann gespannt, wenn die Luftblase eine ausreichende / vollständige Festigkeit erreicht. Wenn die Struktur entleert wird (Ausatmen), liegen die Seile lose auf dem Boden, so dass die Installation vollständig komprimiert werden kann. Nach dem Aufblasen (Einatmen) spannen sich die Seile zu einem perfekten orthogonalen Gitter auf.
N-LIGHT MEMBRANE
Die Installation ist eine Erweiterung der Forschung von Numen/For Use im Bereich der rhythmischen, fast körperlichen Bewegung und ihrer Wahrnehmungswirkung. Ein immersiver, "atmender" Lichtwürfel, dessen drei von sechs Oberflächen aus flexibler Spiegelfolie mit angebrachtem Lufttank und Kompressor bestehen, während die übrigen Spiegel halbtransparentes Spionspiegelglas sind. Durch Aufblasen / Entleeren des Luftbehälters (Lunge) wird die reflektierende Membran konvex oder konkav und verformt das Lichtgitter. Die Fluchtpunkte werden vielfältig und schwer fassbar, die "Neon"-Linien verstreuen sich in Fraktale, die Matrix wird zum Ornament.
Die Ausstellung Breathless von Numen/For Use findet im Rahmen der kroatischen Präsidentschaft des Rates der Europäischen Union im Jahr 2020 statt. Die Installation wird vom Kulturministerium im Rahmen des Kultur- und Kunstprogramms finanziell unterstützt, das in einer gemeinsamen Initiative des Kulturministeriums und des Ministeriums für auswärtige und europäische Angelegenheiten organisiert wird, um die Republik Kroatien während ihres Vorsitzes im Rat der Europäischen Union vorzustellen.
Das kulturelle und künstlerische Programm der kroatischen Präsidentschaft des Rates der Europäischen Union umfasst alle Kunstdisziplinen und das gesamte kulturelle Schaffen Kroatiens - vom kulturellen Erbe bis zur zeitgenössischen Kunst. Einzelne Programme wurden sorgfältig ausgewählt und in Bezug auf die jeweiligen Aufnahmeländer kontextualisiert, um kroatische Kultur und Kunst nachhaltig zu repräsentieren und zu fördern und eine maximale Besucheranzahl zum Ziel zu haben. Neben dem Programm, das während der gesamten sechsmonatigen kroatischen Präsidentschaft im BOZAR-Zentrum für bildende Künste in Brüssel präsentiert wird, sind mehr als 70 Kultur- und Kunst-veranstaltungen in weiteren Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union geplant.

The Croatian-Austrian art collective Numen/For Use is a continuous collaboration between designers and scenographers Sven Jonke, Christoph Katzler and Nikola Radeljković.
Within the framework of Breathless exhibition Numen/For Use posit conceptual and mechanistic models derived from their large scale set-design projects and installation works. Both models expand the experimental field of the initial objects by introducing an element of life-like processes and rhythms, manifested through an orchestrated interval of movement and counter movement - a structural "breathing". This intervention turns formerly static designs into dramaturgical sequences which are now perceived differently, once observed in a loop of senseless assembly and disassembly. They become decontextualised principles, devoid of theatrical metaphors and meaning, but instead pertaining to the mechanistic universe, to the incessant dialectic of construction and destruction, to the flow of matter and spatial uncanny. The form of a regular hexahedron (cube) only reinforces the axiomatic nature of these processes, denoting the most rational fragmentation of space and the structural build up of a three-dimensional matrix.
STRING - A MECHANISTIC MODEL
Defined by Numen/For Use as an autonomous inhabitable social sculpture, String installation is based on a production system of large geometric inflatable objects, an experimental track which the group started with Net Blow Up Installation (multiple layers of flexible netting suspended within an inflated bubble) but this time employing a much riskier material - thin rope- as straining agent/counter brace, instead of safety nets. Both materials gain tension only when the pneumatic bubble achieves adequate/complete solidity. When the structure deflates(exhale), the ropes lay loosely on the ground, enabling the installation to be completely compressed. After inflation (inhale), the ropes tense up to form a perfect orthogonal grid.
N-LIGHT MEMBRANE
The installation is an extension of the Numen/For Use research into the domain of rhythmic, almost bodily movement and its perceptual impact; an immersive, "breathing" light cube whose three out of six surfaces are made of flexible mirror foil with attached air tank and compressor, while the remaining mirrors are semi-transparent spy-glass. Through inflation/deflation of the air tank (lung), the reflective membrane becomes convex or concave, deforming the light grid. The vanishing points become multiple and elusive, "neon" lines scatter into fractals, deep matrix slips into ornament.

The exhibition Breathless by Numen/For Use is held as part of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2020. The installation is financially supported by the Ministry of Culture as part of the cultural and artistic program organized in a joint effort of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, in order to present the Republic of Croatia during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The cultural and artistic program of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union includes all art disciplines and the overall Croatian cultural creation – from cultural heritage to contemporary art. Individual programs have been thoroughly selected and contextualized in relation to respective hosting countries in order to reach maximum visibility of Croatian culture and art, as well as to attract as many visitors as possible. In addition to the program presented at the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels during all six months of the Croatian Presidency, more than 70 cultural and art events are scheduled to be held in further European Union member states.
