BERLINARTPROJECTS präsentiert die erste Einzelausstellung in Berlin von Mehtap Baydu Eine Geschichte von Shahmaran sowie eine Performance der Künstlerin, die bei der Eröffnung gezeigt wird. Im Fokus der Ausstellung steht die Kunst der Performance sowie der von Baydu darum entwickelte Kosmos. Der Titel Shahmaran, eine sinnbildliche hybride Gestalt aus der kurdischen Mythologie, bezieht sich auf die Verkörperung einer Frau, eines/r Fremden, einer/m LiebhaberIn, einer Randerscheinung sowie einem Gegenüber und steht damit für einen Kreislauf von Personifizierungen. Fiktionen, erfundene Charakter und alltägliche Materialien wie Kleidung, Essen, Sprichworte sowie ihr eigener Körper sind Inspirationen und Bestandteile ihrer Arbeit. Die sozio-kulturellen Elemente werden neu zusammengesetzt und arrangiert um die Bedeutung kultureller Objekte sowie multigeografischer Hintergründe zu reflektieren und zu hinterfragen. Angetrieben durch die Suche nach einer feministischen Narration fordert ihre Arbeit patriarchale Strukturen, soziale Normgefüge sowie die Immigrationspolitik heraus und erzählt dabei fiktive Geschichten. In dem Versuch, Menschen in einem künstlerischen, sozialen und politischen Kontext darzustellen, arbeitet Baydu mit einer großen Bandbreite an Materialien und Medien. Während ihr Hauptaugenmerk auf der Performance als Kunstform liegt, greift sie außerdem auf Fotografie, Film, Installation und Skulptur zurück und verleiht damit den unterschiedlichen Stadien ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit eine Sprache.
In der außergewöhnlichen Arbeit Osman (2010-2011) schlüpft die Künstlerin in die Rolle eines gesellschaftlichen Charakters und Stereotyps: in die des Mannes, Anführers, Vaters oder Grundherrn und spielt damit mit der Verkörperung und Glorifizierung eines Mitglieds der Arbeiterklasse. Nur der ‚Tesbih‘, die Kette in ihrer Hand deutet auf ein Motiv aus der islamischen Kultur hin. Die Installationsreihe OSMAN 5451 (2013) gibt mit Fotomaterialien und anderen Dokumenten tiefer Einblick in die Person von Osman. Wie ist es zum Beispiel, ohne einen Ausweis eine Staatsbürgerschaft oder eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis zu beantragen? Die Performance Tragen-Persönlichkeit (2010 – 2014), welche bei der Eröffnung gezeigt wird, kann als Teil einer Installationsarbeit während der gesamten Ausstellung angesehen werden. Als eine auf Recherche basierende Arbeit zeigt sie Texte und Kleider der Performance sowie Fotografien. Die Skulptur-Installation und der Film Stille (2014), gedreht in Anknüpfung an ihre Skulptur Reden ist Silber (2010), beziehen sich auf die sozialen und moralischen Implikationen von persönlichen Meinungen und Äußerungen sowie auf das Gut der Meinungsfreiheit. Eat me – Meet me (2010), ein auf einer Performance basierender Film, zeigt ein grundlegendes soziales Element auf: das Interesse an anderen Menschen, auch das Interesse an der äußeren Erscheinung von Menschen, ihren Körpern.
Mehtap Baydu, geb. 1972 in Bingöl, Türkei, lebt und arbeitet in Kassel und Berlin. Zwischen 2005 und 2010 studierte sie Freie Kunst an der Kunsthochschule Kassel bei Prof. Dorothee von Windheim und legte bei ihr und bei Prof. Urls Lüthi ihre Abschlussprüfung ab. Anschließend war sie bis 2011 Meisterschülerin von Prof. Dorothee von Windheim. Sie erhielt Stipendien der Universität und der Braun Stiftung. Zuvor studierte sie von 1997 – 2000 Bildhauerei an der Kunst¬fakultät der Hacettepe Universität in Ankara, Türkei. In 2011 erhielt sie neben einer Projektförderung durch die Dr. Wolfgang-Zippel-Stiftung den UPK – Kunstpreis Kassel. Zu ihren letzten Ausstellungen gehören alèm mar in Montes Carlos, Brasilien, SILENCE im Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2014), HEUTE HIER - bugün burada im Haus am KLIESTPARK, Berlin, 2013, Nev Nesil: Kafa Kağıdı, Galeri Nev, Ankara, THE UNANSWERED QUESTION. A TALE OF SHAHMARAN

BERLINARTPROJECTS is pleased to host the first solo exhibition in Berlin by the artist Mehtap Baydu, The Tale of Shahmaran, which will feature a performance at the opening. The focus of the exhibition lies on the act of performing and the cosmos that the artist creates around it. Shahmaran, an allegorical hybrid creature from Kurdish mythology, refers to the embodiment of a woman, a stranger, a lover, a marginal and the other and therefore symbolizes open-ended personifications. Fiction stories, invented characters and everyday life materials such as clothes, food, sayings and her body are inspirational ingredients for her work. These socio-cultural elements are composed to reflect on diverse geographical backgrounds and the meaning of cultural artefacts as well as their various readings. Driven by the search for a feminist narrative her work challenges patriarchal structures, social norms and immigration politics and develops fictional stories. In an attempt to portray people’s stories in an artistic, social and political context, Baydu works with a wide range of material and medium. While the main emphasis of her work is on performance, she also uses photography, video, installation and sculptural objects to communicate different stages of her artistic process. The appearance and the use of the body are as essential to her as the spontaneous acts and contributions by the audience during the performance. Although it may appear as if each piece is influenced by a specific cultural tradition or situation, there is always something basic and human about them that everyone can relate to.
Osman (2010-2011), is an outstanding photographic work of the exhibition, in which the artist assumes the role and stereotype of a man, a leader, a father or a landowner and therefore symbolizes the glorification of a member of the working class. Only the ‘tesbih’, the beads in her hand subtly hint at a motive from Islamic culture. The installation series OSMAN 5451 (2013), including photographs and documents, gives further insight into the character of Osman. What would it be like to apply for a citizenship without a passport and an official residency permit? The performance held at the opening, Tragen-Persönlichkeit (2010-2014) (to assume a personality), will also be presented as an installation piece throughout the exhibition. As a research-based performative work the work features texts and dresses used during the performance as well as photographs. The sculptural installation and the video piece Stille (2014), produced as a continuation of her sculpture piece Reden ist Silber (2010), refer to social and moral implications of expressing oneself and of speaking out loud as well as to freedom of speech. Eat me - Meet me (2010), a video piece based on a performance, tries to reveal a basic human element: the interest one has in other human beings that also includes an interest in their outer appearance, their body.
Mehtap Baydu, b. 1972 in Bingöl, Turkey, lives and works in Kassel and Berlin. She studied fine arts at Kunsthochschule Kassel with Prof. von Windheim and graduated with her as well as Prof. Urls Lüthi. From 2010 – 2011 she was a master student of Prof. Dorothee von Windheim. She received stipends from the university as well as from the Braun Stiftung. From 1997 – 2000 she studied sculpture at the Fine Arts Faculty, Hacettepe University. In 2011 she got funds for a project by the Dr. Wolfgang-Zippel Stiftung and also received the prize UPK – Kunstpreis Kassel.
